Polytechnic Trades Academy Visit
Polytechnic Trades Academy Visit
On Friday 16th of August a number of students were taken to Otago Secondary School Trades Academy (OSTC) at the Cromwell Polytechnic.

The day was organised as a practical hands-on taste of the courses available for our students in Year 12 and 13. It was designed to help students make informed decisions for their senior subject selections, to help remove barriers to attending and open their eyes to the practical style of learning. The Polytechnic staff were amazing, they organised practical activities, were informative and very welcoming.

Automotive and Building

Our students explored potential careers in automotive and carpentry fields with hands-on experiences and insights into these trades. In the automotive section, students engaged with modern diagnostic tools and repair techniques, learning about the various specialisations within the field.

Cookery/Hospitality and Beauty

Trish and Karla the Hospitality and Cookery tutors met with the students and showed them around their teaching space. They outlined their courses, explained what a typical day was like and how students are assessed. Our students also observed and asked questions with the Hospitality Level 2 and Cookery Level 3 students who were working in the kitchen with them. They were put into action making cupcakes, using the coffee machines to make hot chocolate and making chips and pizza. Through this they experienced the commercial kitchen and what it would be like to learn in this space.

Meanwhile, Emily the Beauty tutor, met with students to discuss course content in Level 2 and 3. She showed them the teaching space and resources used. Emily was able to tell us about her background in the beauty industry, the variety of pathways available and tertiary study opportunities.

Horticulture and Sports Turf

The Horticulture tutor got the tractor out and a number of students got to drive the tractor and learnt how to operate the sprayer. Then we were given a tour of their orchard where he explained what they did there over a year. Finally we visited the propagation nursery where we saw all stages plants are nurtured through in a season.
