This involved bringing together approximately 300 neurodivergent young people aged 13 - 25 and supporters to Parliament for a Neurodiversity Hui on Friday 19 July 2024. Lukin was fortunate to be sponsored by Neuro Sense Limited to fly to Wellington and represent our region. There were also representatives from the
Neurodiversity in Education Coalition, politicians and media present.
Lukin arrived at Parliament House at 12pm, where he was given a cookie and badge. The group were then taken to a theatre area in the Beehive for the hui. At 1pm they were spoken to by Tory Whanau the Mayor of Wellington and Chloe Swarbrick the Green party co-leader the "Star of the Show" (in Lukin's words). They both talked about growing up with ADHD and Neurodiverse experiences for students at schools and how the system has failed them. After this there was a Q&A talk with the Minister of Mental Health Matt Doocey and two other ministers Hon Jan Tinetti the Labour shadow minister of Education and Lawrence Xu-Nan from the Green Party. After this Lukin managed to get some selfies with Nicola Willis and Chloe Swarbrick, before a big group photo was taken.
This was a dream come true for Lukin to go to Parliament as he has a huge knowledge and interest in National and Local Governance. He said that the two major learnings/highlights from the experience was that there are many other students around like himself and that he was able to meet very famous New Zealanders. Lukin's take away from the event was:
"I believe with the right amount of support anyone can do anything that they desire".
Lukin would like to thank the following people for their support to make this possible:
Kylie Wild - APM Workcare Limited
Chris Wild - Neuro Sense Limited
