Winter Driving Experience
On Thursday the 23rd of May, on a beautiful sunny and cold Central Otago morning, Dunstan High School was lucky enough to be able to send nine of our senior students to a Winter Driving Course at Highlands in Cromwell.

This opportunity was kindly sponsored for our students by Fulton Hogan. Students took their own vehicles to the course and were asked to drive quickly and then brake suddenly to test their brake function. Students were also taught how to control a car while driving in icy conditions by driving the Highlands car which has plastic wheels to imitate the feeling of driving on icy surfaces. Further braking activities and cone slalom driving followed, all of which were designed to give the participants confidence in their ability to drive in winter conditions. Our students appreciated the wise words of their instructors on the day and I am sure they are better prepared for winter driving as a result. As one of the course participants Hailey Petrie said “The Highlands Winter Driving course was really helpful and I'm so grateful I got this opportunity.”

As a school we are very appreciative of Fulton Hogan for their continued support of our students and wider community.

My thanks to Hailey Petrie and Jimmy Whyte for their contribution to this article.
