Orokonui Ecosanctuary Visit
On Friday 17th of May our Yr 9 class of students with teacher Mr Knyvett, travelled outside of Dunedin, to Orokonui Ecosanctuary; a community-led 307 hectare Native Wildlife sanctuary, thriving with the most precious and endangered range of biodiverse plants and animals that live in Aotearoa.

Fenced with a 9km predator-free fence, Orokonui is free of introduced mammalian predators leaving its wildlife to grow on for years to come. The purpose of our trip was to better understand adaptations by survival of the fittest amongst NZ Native Species.

Arriving at the Ecosanctuary, our team were met by Tahu, Educator and co-designer of the Peka Peka Cat Proof Feeder, who taught us about the importance and history of the Ecosanctuary. Alongside her were some scientists studying some of the precious endangered species at Orokonui. They shared their knowledge about how important it is to protect what we put in our waterways and how we can help against the decreasing amount of native animals in Aotearoa.

Heading into the Sanctuary, our first stop was at the eel pond where we did a test to find out what small insects and bugs were found in the pond, and how their individual adaptations made them suitable for a specific water environment.

After which we travelled along the track to engulf ourselves in the dense native bush, learning about the variety and different habitats that native living plants and animals call home. Lastly entering the grasslands, Tahu explained were home to many territorial Black Otago Skinks and even a wandering takahÄ“.

An unforgettable experience, some favourites from the trip were getting up close and personal to Snotty, Orakanui’s Kaka, and learning about how important ecosystems like Orokanui are for rich, biodiverse, native wildlife; and of course (Noah’s favourite) the stops along the trip for food.

This trip was definitely once in a lifetime and we all enjoyed it, so thank you to all who made it possible.
